    Active crossover

    For the 604-8H's.

    What would you choose?

What are your preferences in managability? New or Used? Analog or digital?

Used, cheap, and up to the task would be the venerable Rane AC22/AC23.

New, flexible, cheap, and NOT behringer, the BBE DS-24 would get you into a DSP based management system. I think 604-8H's are what member dgwojo is bi-amping with a DS24 or DS26, he's very pleased with it.

Be aware, the BBE is only 48 kHz, the Behringer is 96.

Peavey digitals can be found cheap, aren't too bad for maybe 50 if you see one.

Altecs can also be found used at times.

Ashly and Rane are decent and can be found cheap.

Do you think this is a significant issue in the home listening environment?

I "think" i actually prefer the sound of the BBE's to the Behringer, but haven't done any kind of fair A/B comparison. The BBE is a little easier to access and adjust from the front panel, but what i'm calling easier may just be "different" in reality.

Also, i've only used the BBE to drive tube amps on the HF, where my 2496 lives in an all SS powered system. I'm wondering if the tendency of the tube amps to roll off the HF is playing a role here?

    Re: Active crossover

For several years I have been running Marchand Electronics' active, tube XM-26 crossover (1500hz crossover, 12 db/octave slope) on my 604e's, and it has made absolutely the greatest contribution to clarity and control over all other equipment decisions I have made in 30 years. I'm running a McIntosh MC-225 on the top, and a Cary CAA 1 on the bottom.

You may be interested in looking at Marchand's web site before you make your decision:
